Many people are unaware that one of the oldest forms of engineering is boat building. Is has been showen that from the oldest known inhabitants of this Earth the aboriginies of Australia used to use boat over 40,000 years ago. Obviously it has pass the test of time

Many people these days are interested in building and designing boats. Many of them dont know where to start and I have been asked this question on a few occaisons hence the blog!

There is many topics involved with designing boats and boat design software. People designing boats generally are either professional organisations or people taking it up as a hobby.

Having said that there is much information and products on the market and designing and building a boat is a large project to ensure that you get a seaworthy vessel. So great boat design software is important.

On the first note you have to make sure the boat floats and this requires excellent design and tight construction. It is sad to see a proud boat owner finally launching their creation only to see their face change when the boat slowly fills up with water…

Another factor to consider is can the boat hold weight? This weight could be cargo or passengers. Low sitting hulls can lead themselves to problems as yes that might travel fast but will a bit of extra weight make it sink?

Having said the above what boat design software you have will be important. I have reviewed many softwares for boat design, some of them are incredibly expensive and are well above the hobbiest, these take years of training but are powerful tools when master.

On the other hand for the hobbiest some of them are just a replacement for a designing a boat by hand with a couple of extras. Of the cheaper ones that I have tried I have found 3D Boat Design to be the best.
